Advanced surgical training programs are offered by many hospitals and health networks throughout Australia. The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons oversees and accredits these training programs.

There are certain standards that must be met for a hospital to be accredited to train surgeons (details can be found on the RACS website) and there are also strict rules as to the nature of clinical work that each trainee must be exposed to. Thus there is a degree of uniformity and standardisation of training throughout Australia. Over and above this though the training experience available through each hospital will obviously be different.

Allocation of rotations typically takes into consideration each trainees prior experience, preferences and seniority. The advanced training scheme in general surgery is designed to train surgeons to be capable of managing the spectrum of general surgical conditions. Over the course of 4 years you will be rotated through units covering general surgery as well as the subspecialties of colorectal, upper GI and HPB, breast and endocrine, and vascular and trauma surgery. This leaves some flexibility to tailor your training to your own goals however at present the aim of training is not to produce subspecialist surgeons. Preference for rotations is usually given to the most senior registrars particularly those sitting the part II examinations. This may mean that early in training you are allocated to lower preference jobs, but as you progress through training you will receive the benefits of this policy.

Below you will find a list of hospitals with accredited training schemes in general surgery. Each links to further details of the training offered by that pareticular scheme. Every effort is made to ensure that the information presented is accurate and up to date however no responsibility can be taken for inaccuracies. You are advised to contact a hospital directly for the most current information.
