Case 88: Retained foreign body

1. What methods are there for removing rectal foreign bodies?

1. Allowing them to pass spontaneously - risks perforation if impacted
2. Transanally - with analgesia or anaesthetic +/- pushing on the lower abdomen to help evacuate the object
3. Transanally - endoscopically - using the fleixble endoscope to grasp the object.
4. Transanally - using the operating sigmoidoscope
5. Transabdominally - pushing the object out the anal outlet or use of a colotomy and object removal.

2. What are the problems associated with rectal foreign bodies in general?

1. Rectal perforation - pararectal sepsis, abscess, peritonitis, fistula.
2. Sphincter injury
3. Recto-vaginal fistula.
4. Recurrence due to personality / preference / associated psychiatric disorder.
