Case 108: Colonoscopic Appearance

A 64 year old woman was having a colonoscopy for rectal bleeding and constipation.

1. What is this mucosal appearance called?

Melanosis Coli

2. What associations does it have?

Long term stimulant laxitive use. Some of these patients have hypomotility disorders, but not all. Some are just serial laxitive users.

3. What was the rectal bleeding most likely due to?

Probably anal outlet due to passing hard stool - ie haemorrhoidal (presuming the rest of the colonoscopy was normal.)

Even the smallest adenoma is easily seen in this condition.
